Ohno always goes to his bakery on foot. He loves to feel the fresh air before he begins work. It gives him a lot of inspiration. But a few days ago… he saw something beautiful when he walked to his shop. A beautiful scene that he has never seen before. A handsome young man wearing glasses was sitting near the window in Aiba’s café. He was supporting his head with one hand and was holding a book in his other hand, with a serious but charming look on his face.
Maybe, for many of us, it would have been an ordinary thing, but for Ohno… it meant many things. It made his heart and mind go wild.
That man… he had never met him before. Ohno had already been living there for a long time but he had never seen this man before. His eyes… even though he was wearing glasses, Ohno could still see a pair of beautiful eyes. His hands, even though they made such a simple and ordinary pose, made Ohno fall in love.
He fell in love at first sight. Yeah… He was really sure about that.
Since that day, Ohno tries to walk past Aiba’s café at the same time and taking the same path just to meet his new inspiration before he goes to work. His slows down his pace every time he sees that man, again sitting in the same spot. Every morning. Always at the same time.
But then one day, he doesn't see the man. He's so sad when he arrives at his shop. He almost has no motivation at all. It feels like his soul had gone somewhere else when he didn’t see this beautiful young man. Ohno's behaviour confuses and irritates Sho, his co-worker.
“That's not like you, Ohno-san! Why are you so sad early in the morning? You know we need more spirit for our work with those delicious cookies and breads! You know that, don’t you?!” Sho blurts out. Ohno, however, just leans his head on the table, speechless.
“Earth to Ohno Satoshi! Come on, speak to me!!” Sho says, throwing his hands in the air.
“I just… need to meet him…” Ohno finally says. But Sho can’t hear him since he is talking in a small voice. Almost a whisper.
“Hah? What?”
Instead of answering Sho’s question, Ohno just sighs. Sho facepalms in desperation.
“Konnichiwa…” The doorbell chimes and a customer enters the shop.
“Ah… haii~ Welcome…” Sho finally gives up questioning Ohno. He prefers serving the costumer to talking with Ohno.
“How may I be of service, sir?”
“Ah… actually, Aiba-san recommended this bakery to me to find good cookies,” the costumer tells Sho who walks up to him.
“Oh… wonderful. You have come to the right place. We sell a vast range of different tasting cookies and bread. Well… For breakfast, teatime or as a midnight snack? What would you like to drink with your cookies? We also have coffee and tea,” Sho asks.
“Hmm… I would like to eat something else than the plain bread in Aiba-san’s café. Because I love having sweets with my coffee in the morning.” The customer starts to look around the shop.
“Ah… I see. What kind of coffee? Cappuccino? Mochachino? Or black coffee?”
“I usually drink black coffee. But I need something sweet that goes with it,” the customer chuckles. Maybe embarrassed about himself.
“How about this one? This one tastes very good. It's sweet yet not too sugary. It might just fit your taste and your black coffee…” Sho leads him to a display rack and points at one of the cookies. The customer looks confused.
“I'd like to try them first? If you don’t mind?” he asks.
Sho seems confused too. He is silent for a moment. “Hmm… let me ask Ohno-san first.”
Sho goes back to the kitchen and sees Ohno, frozen, still in the same position. Sho shakes his head, not knowing what to do anymore. It is so unbelievable to see this kind of Ohno Satoshi.
“Ohno-san, there is a customer who is asking for a taster of the cookies. Do we have any today?” Sho asks while patting his co-worker’s shoulder. He hears him sigh. Ohno moves to reach for some small pieces of bread lying on a tray on the table. His movements look so dead it's like he is a robot. Sho can't take it anymore and drags Ohno away from the table.
“What? You said there is a costumer who asked for a taster?” Ohno looks annoyed at Sho. This time Sho is the one who sighs.
“Clear your head and lend me your ears first. I said “cookie” not “bread”. Are you listening to me, Oh-chan?”
Ohno blinks once. Twice.
“Oh… okay…” He takes the tray with the cookie samples, a little ashamed of his mistake, and goes out of the kitchen.
“My God… what happened to him today…” Sho mumbles as he follows Ohno.
“I’m sorry for making you wait… here are… your…” Ohno says, shocked to see his new costumer.
It's the beautiful young man he has seen every morning. The man who inspired him to make more cookies and heavily influenced his work. The man with whom he fell in love without realizing it. That man… standing in front of him.
“Hello? Sir? Are you okay?” The man waves his palm in front of Ohno’s face. Ohno blinks as he snaps back to reality.
“I… I’m fine. Of course I’m fine…” Ohno smiles when he sees the man laughing at him. The man raises his eyebrows at Ohno, not knowing what to do as they are just staring at each other.
“Oh! Yes! The taster. Here you are. Just… just try it…” Ohno offers him the cookies.
The man takes one of the cookies that Sho recommended. Ohno watches as the man chews the cookie and really takes in the taste of it. Ohno finds it a bit weird but adorable. Then finally, the man smiles contentedly. Ohno’s heart skips a beat when looking at the grin the latter is giving him.
“Hmmmmm~ I like the taste of this cookie! No, I love it! Can I have one pack, please?”
“Of course you can, sir! If you want them so badly, you can have all of them for free, sir,” Ohno exclaims without even thinking. Sho, standing near the door, drops his jaw.
“Ahahahaha… really? You are really funny…”
“Ohno…”
“Eh?”
AH! Yabaii!!! Ohno screams silently.
“M-my name is… Ohno Satoshi…” Ohno stutters, feeling awkward. He can feel his cheeks burning because of what he has done. The man lets out a light chuckle. Ohno thinks it is extremely cute, but that doesn't help him with trying to hide his now reddened cheeks.
“Oh… Nice to meet you.”
Quickly, Ohno gives him two packs of cookies.
“Here… for you. I was actually dead serious when I said you can have them for free,” he says as he feels so nervous.
“You are so funny, Ohno-san…” The latter smiles at him. “But I still have to pay for them.”
“No. Please don’t. You can have them. For your… morning coffee,” Ohno says. The man looks at the two packs of cookies in his hand.
“Wow. Thank you very much. I’ll really repay you someday…” He bows and thanks him once again with his charming smile before he exits the shop.
Ohno’s eyes follow the man until he has disappeared from his sight.
“And… what is his name, Oh-chan,” Sho asks behind him.
Ohno blinks fast, then his eyes widen when he realizes...
“I FORGOT TO ASK HIIIIMMMM!!!!!” he screams.
Sho laughs at how funny Ohno is looking. It is really rare to find Ohno screaming so loud with that funny face. Sho shakes his head in amusement.
“Ah~ I see someone who’s in love…” Sho chuckles, enjoying the teasing and Ohno’s panic mode.
--
The next day Ohno leaves his house a little early, carrying two bags of homemade cookies. He wants to stop first at Aiba’s cafe before going to work. So he sits down at a table near where the man he wants to see usually sits. The man hasn't arrived yet.
He checks the time and realizes that the man should already be there. But there is no sign of the man arriving and Ohno is frustrated. He opens one of the bags and consoles himself with the cookies.
“Slow down there, Ohno-kun…” Aiba says with a small chuckle. Ohno looks up at him.
“Oh… hello Aiba-kun. Ohayou~”
“May I sit here?” Aiba asks. Ohno nods.
“This is your café, why are you so polite?”
“Hahahaha… manners Ohno-kun, manners. And you are my customer here.” Aiba takes a seat on the chair in front of Ohno.
“Ah… by the way… I saw a cute young man in your café yesterday. Who is he?”
“Hmm? Which cute young man?” Aiba tilts his head, confused.
“The handsome one who wears glasses and who always reads a book near the window there?” Ohno points at one of the tables near a big window.
“Ah!!! Nino-chan, you mean? Ahahahaha… I can't believe someone would say he is cute,” Aiba laughs at him, making Ohno feel embarrassed.
“Yeah… yeah… whatever…” Ohno takes another cookie and chews it, annoyed.
“You see, we have been good friends since forever. He is probably the most moody person I’ve ever met.”
“I wasn’t asking about your relationship whatsoever. I was just asking who he is.” Ohno looks at Aiba with a pout, which makes him look cuter than usual.
“My, my! How impatient you are, Ohno-kun. Ahahahaha…” Aiba laughs again.
“Well… His name is Ninomiya Kazunari. He is new here. He is originally from Tokyo. We are childhood friends and have known each other since kindergarten. He is the most pedantic musician I have ever met, he rarely goes outside, he's a perfectionist when it comes to music and games because those are his favorite things, and he doesn't like noisy places…” Aiba pauses and looks at Ohno who's paying attention. “Anything else you want to know about him?” Aiba asks.
Ohno leans back, thinking.
“Ninomiya Kazunari…” Ohno mumbles the name. It makes Aiba smile at him. “So he is new here. Where does he live now?”
“Oh… near the beach with the little port. His house is the yellow one with a little garden in the front. He loves gardening sometimes. When he is not lazy,” Aiba explains.
“I don’t understand…” Ohno says and that confuses Aiba.
“Hah? Which piece of information did you not understand?”
“I mean… he lived in a big city. Why did he move to this little town? I mean… in Tokyo you have almost anything you need at hand, right?” Ohno asks while looking at the table where that man - whose name is Ninomiya Kazunari - always sits.
Aiba shakes his head. “I don’t know. He never told me. But he said he has a little problem in Tokyo and wants to clear his mind here.”
--
And that was the day Ohno found out the man’s name and little facts about him. Ninomiya Kazunari.
--
The next morning, Ohno walks slowly in front of Aiba’s café. But he doesn't see Ninomiya Kazunari. However, Ninomiya enters Ohno’s shop at noon, searching for a new taste of sweet cookies. He has a bag with him. Ohno gives the bag a questioning look.
“Ah… almost forgot. This. For you. For paying your cookies last time. I hope you enjoy it.” Nino hands him the bag. Ohno takes it, feeling nervous as his stomach is doing backflips.
“What is this?” he asks as he opens the bag.
“That is… a pie. A cherry pie.”
Ohno looks at him with a shocked face.
“A musician who can cook?!” Ohno almost yells. It makes Nino chuckle.
“Of course I can. For someone who lives alone, cooking is important to keep your stomach full.”
“Can… can I try it now?”
“You’re really eager when it comes to food, nee?” Nino looks at him with a smile.
“I love food. Every food has its own unique taste and is full of love,” Ohno walks behind the display window to put the bag away.
“What about lunch?” Nino asks.
“Lunch? I love lunch too…”
“Ahahahaha… no. I mean. Do you want to have lunch? Now?”
“Eh?” Ohno is dumbfounded but then he finally realizes what Nino said. He feels his cheeks burn.
“Because you said you want to try it now. And it’s almost lunch time.”
“Oh… OH! I see. Okay. Wanna come to the kitchen? I'll cut your pie there.”
“If that won’t trouble you, okay…” he says.
--
“You are so lucky nee~, Oh-chan…” Sho says after he came back from lunch at another place. He found his co-worker smiling wide, almost grinning, and Nino coming out of the kitchen, leaving Ohno to his daydreams.
“I~ am~ happy~” Ohno sings while smiling at Sho.
“Okay, okay… now your smile looks so weird and creepy.” Sho tries to avoid Ohno’s eyes.
“Konnichiwaaaaa~” A cheerful voice comes from the door.
“Welcome in our shop, Tall Man…” Sho laughs at Aiba who pouts at that nickname.
“I’m not a Tall Man. I’m Aiba. And I am your customer,” he folds his arms in front of his chest.
“Running out of bread again, Aiba-kun?” Sho asks.
Aiba nods. “Nino-chan said I have to order more tasty cookies from you instead of baking them myself. Since when does he hate my cookies?” Aiba looks at Ohno who keeps spacing out.
“What happened with him, Sho?”
“Ah… you know. Fell in love with one of your customers.”
“I didn't think he was serious,” Aiba whispers while Sho just nods.
“Me neither…”
“HEY! I’m serious and I can hear you guys!” Ohno gives them his death glare.
The bell chimes again. This time, a tall man wearing an expensive looking suit enters the shop. He starts looking around.
“Welcome, can we help you, sir?” Ohno asks.
“Yes… um… I need a loaf of bread. I have to meet someone and he loves bread so much,” the guy replies.
“I have the perfect bread, sir. This one, sir,” Ohno gestures at one of the loaves. “This one has three different flavors. So you can enjoy one flavor while looking forward to the next one.”
The guy nods.
“I'll buy this then.”
“I haven’t seen that guy before…” Sho says after the customer exited the shop.
“Me neither. Did you see that? His suit? He must be a rich guy.”
Sho nods. “Um… looked so expensive.”
“I wonder who he's going to meet…” Ohno mumbles.
--
Later in the afternoon, Ohno has an appointment with captain Murosaki, who owns the boat he always borrows. After meeting him, Ohno decides to go fishing. He sings while walking with his stuff for fishing. Suddenly, he sees a yellow house with many flowers in the yard. He doesn't really notice that he is smiling.
Then, however, he sees a fancy car that suddenly stops in front of the house. A man gets out of the car. Ohno realizes that it is his costumer from a few hours ago with the expensive suit. He is carrying the bread he bought at the bakery. Ohno immediately hides behind a tree near Nino’s yard. He has no idea why he is hiding.
That man walks nervously towards the door. He rings the bell after he sighed a few times.
“Wait a moment~” Nino’s voice can be heard from inside. A few seconds later, the door swings open. Instead of smiling, Nino's expression changes when he sees the man and his eyes darken.
“What are you doing here?” His voice is dark too. Not as sweet as Ohno remembers.
“I… I just wanted to say sorry. And I wanted to give you this bread as a symbol of how sorry I am …” The man offers him the bag with the bread from Ohno’s shop. Nino only looks at the man with angry eyes. He doesn't even offer him to come inside.
“Look Nino… I’m so sorry about what happened in the past,” the man says.
“Like hell I’ll forget it so easily…” Nino folds his arms. He keeps on looking straight into that man's eyes.
“Toma already asked for forgiveness several times. What else can we do to make you forgive us?”
Nino looks at his little garden with a sad face. “Go to hell… both of you. Disappear from my life and I’m not even sure doing that would make me forgive you.” Nino almost whispers, but it's still loud enough for the man to hear it.
“We are so sorry, Kazu…” he says after a deafening silence.
“I’m sorry. I can’t, Matsumoto-san. Please leave…” Nino says as he hides himself behind the door.
“At least take the bread.”
Nino looks at the bag and sighs. “I’m sorry…” After that he closes the door and leaves the man standing dumbfounded in front of his door.
Ohno sees the man take out an elegant-looking envelope from his pocket and slip it inside the bag. He then leaves the bag on Nino’s doorstep before he drives away. Ohno comes out from his hiding spot looking at Nino’s house and wondering what happened.
He slowly walks to the door, looking at the bag. What actually happened in Ninomiya’s past? Is the man one of the reasons he moved here?
Just when Ohno has squatted down and is busy looking at the bag, Nino opens the door. It makes Ohno yelp and he accidentally topples over, landing on his ass.
“Ohno-san?! What are you doing here?” Nino shouts surprised.
“I-I… I…” Ohno looks around for an excuse and when he sees his stuff, he kind of remembers his original intention. “I’m… fishing?” he says, not quite sure, however.
"Ah… I didn't know you love fishing, Ohno-san…”
“Wa-wanna join me?”
“Is it okay?"
Ohno nods. “The sea is good. I think I can catch some fish for our dinner,” Ohno says after standing up with Nino’s help.
“I don’t know. Water and me means trouble, I get seasick easily.”
“It’s okay… as long as you are with me, you’ll be fine. I promise.”
--
Ohno has never seen any beginner catch as many fish as Nino after he struggled with his seasickness for a few minutes. Ohno gave Nino one of his fishing rods and some bait and taught him how to fish. Now, while they are fishing, Nino looks so happy. He is a fast learner and he has good luck. They catch a lot of fish for dinner before sunset. Nino offers to prepare the fish on the boat.
Ohno suddenly feels like they are on a date. And he can’t stop blushing so hard. He hopes Nino doesn't notice it in the light of the full moon.
Ohno looks at Nino who is busy preparing the fish. “You should learn more about fishing. You are very good at it.”
He can see Nino nod. “Maybe I’ll consider that,” Nino adds with a smile.
“Here… I hope you like it, Ohno-san…” Nino offers him a plate full of meat.
“Thank you, Ninomiya-san…”
“Oh, please call me Nino. Or Kazu is okay. I had fun with this fishing thing.”
Ohno looks like he has his doubts about that. “It's okay if you didn't like it."
“No. Really. I had fun today. And it seems like I can trust you.” Ohno blushes.
“May I ask something?” Ohno says.
“Of course. Anything…”
“Who is the man from before, Nino-san?”
That question makes Nino freeze. He places his chopsticks down while also looking down. Like he's trying to avoid eye contact with Ohno.
“You said you trust me, don’t you?”
Still no answer from Nino. Ohno sighs.
“I’m sorry for asking that question. Your private problems shouldn't concern me. I’m so rude to ask that…” Ohno looks at Nino who keeps on staring at the waves of the sea.
“I… I’m so sorry, Nin-”
“He was my boyfriend… once… in my past…” Nino suddenly says. His eyes are probably on the waves but he might also be looking past them.
“We… were good friends. Me, Ju - no… I mean - Matsumoto, and Toma. We have been best friends since junior high school. Matsumoto and me became lovers when we were in senior high school. But…” Nino pauses for a moment. Ohno can see a sparkle on Nino’s cheeks. That’s a tear, running down slowly.
“But then I was stupid enough not to notice that Matsumoto was two-timing me. Matsumoto and Toma started dating when Matsumoto and I had already been together for three months. He… They lied to me… I would have probably been fooled for longer by those douches, had I not seen them kissing after our college grad party… and… and I…”
Sudden warmth spreads around Nino when Ohno suddenly hugs him from behind. Not really tight. Just tight enough to make Nino’s heart feel some warmth and stop his tears.
“Don’t… don’t continue the story if it still hurts you …” Ohno whispers.
“No, Ohno-san… it’s okay. I-I came to this town to forget about everything. I already… promised myself to move on… from them. I have to forget them…”
Ohno breaths so steadily that it makes Nino’s heartbeat calm down. Ohno can feel Nino take a deep breath before he continues his story.
“It seems that some people already knew their secret. There were rumors about it. But I was so stupid to believe in my best friend and my lover, so I didn't pay any attention to what people said. I thought… maybe it's only a rumor. Maybe it's fake news because Matsumoto and I are the perfect couple. But then… I saw it with my own eyes. I noticed that they made love in our apartment when I wasn't there. I-I… I thought it was only bec-because we were friends, so fucking your friend doesn't count as cheating. I really thought that way for a long time. Bu-but then… then I saw a beautifully designed wedding invitation on my lover’s laptop. Instead of Matsumoto’s and my name, there was Matsumoto's and Toma's. I… I hate myself! I hate myself for being so stupid and for thinking well of my lover and my best friend, even though they... I’m so stupid, Ohno-san… so stupid…”
Nino hugs Ohno back while crying his heart out. And Ohno can feel it. He feels how hurt and in pain Nino has been all this time. Who would not feel hurt if cheated by a lover for so long? Ohno rubs Nino’s back. Nino cries and hides his face against Ohno’s chest.
“It’s okay, Kazu… it's okay. You are not stupid. Your love is pure… you are not stupid…” Ohno repeats the words, to make sure that Nino will not think he’s stupid.
They keep hugging each other. It feels like time has stopped. They lose all track of time. Maybe it's already been an hour? Ohno is not sure how much time it took Nino to stop his tears.
“I-I’m sorry Ohno-san… your clothes…” Nino says as he stops hugging Ohno. Ohno shakes his head and offers Nino some tissues.
“It's okay. I can wash them later. At least…” He looks at Nino and he brings his hands up to cup Nino’s face. Ohno’s thumbs caress his cheeks, making sure to wipe away the tears from that beautiful face.
“At least… you have cried your heart out now. Feeling better?”
Nino nods.
“May I say something?” Ohno says again. “Actually… I have been watching you for months. I know that sounds creepy, but hear me out. Since the first time I saw you sitting in Aiba’s café, reading your book, with your glasses. I… I don’t know if this can be called love. But I’m sure enough that I fell for you back then…”
Ohno stares at Nino’s confused face.
“Do you… well, do you want to be my boyfriend?” Ohno finally asks, successfully making Nino gasp.
“Wh-what? Why so sudden??”
“Because I want to help you forget…”
Nino blinks. “That’s rude, Ohno-san…” he says.
“I-I just-”
“Becoming my ‘medicine’ might be painful,” Nino tries to explain.
Instead of being confused by Nino’s words, Ohno smiles at him. “Un… but I’m okay with it. As long as I can help you forget. It's okay…”
Nino looks at the moon. “I… want to be your boyfriend?” Ohno smiles.
“And now, who is actually asking who?” Nino laughs at him.
“It's already late in the night. It’s not good for a composer to stay awake…” Ohno drives the boat back to the little harbor.
Ohno walks Nino to his house, carrying the fishing stuff and the rest of the fish that they caught together. Something has been bothering Nino until they arrive at his house.
“Jyaa nee, Nino-san. Let’s meet again tomorrow.” Ohno bows and smiles, then turns to leave Nino who is still standing in front of his door.
“Ohno-san!” Nino calls for Ohno and makes the latter turn around to look at him.
“Yes?”
“How did you know I’m a musician?”
“I-I just knew…”
Nino cups Ohno’s cheeks. “Liar… you are a bad liar, you know that?” He chuckles.
“I knew it from Aiba-san…?” Ohno says, not sure.
“Ah… that Aibaka… I will scold him later,” Nino mumbles.
Nino is surprised when suddenly Ohno’s hand - once again - cups his cheeks. And this time, he can see Ohno’s face clearly as it slowly comes closer. And their lips touch each other. But Nino doesn't mind at all. He is already starting to love this cute man.
“I-I’m sorry…” Ohno suddenly stops and runs away from Nino. But he comes to a halt a few meters away from him. He turns around to see Nino again.
“Don’t forget to stay warm. And... You know, as of tomorrow you should call me Satoshi now that we are lovers. Don’t forget about it!!” And Ohno continues running home, leaving Nino laughing about his new boyfriend.
“Ah… cute and such an honest old man…” Nino mumbles. He is still smiling, as he watches Ohno become smaller and smaller until he disappears from his sight.
And that night, Nino can finally sleep with a smile on his face. He can finally sleep without crying. He knows, he just knows, that love really does heal anything. That night he has a beautiful dream.
