Stranger until the day we meet

Jun absolutely hated waiting, especially in the summer heat. Sweat was slowly rolling down his temples even though he was standing in the shadow. This wasn't the weather to meet someone outside in the middle of the day, he was supposed to stay in his comfortable and air-conditioned apartment for the whole day, working on his next article for the magazine he was working at. His day was supposed to be filled with looking up information about useless but fashionable gadgets nobody should buy but did anyway, not with heating up his body so much he felt like he would melt any moment now. The worst part was that he didn't even know who he was supposed to meet as he had been stupid enough to get involved in a blind date. He didn't know why he had done it, only that he had a weak moment and hoped to find someone to love in this cold city where even his neighbors were strangers to him. A man just a few feet away from him caught his attention, looking around as if he was searching for someone. Could it finally be the man he was waiting for? He was already half an hour late. He tried to smile when the man indeed came to him, smiling slightly. Jun could see a nervous twitch on the man's round face as he came closer.

"Excuse me, are you... uhm, could it be that you are..." Jun just sighed and nodded, even though he felt the man looked a bit out of place.

"Matsumoto Jun." The man froze when Jun stretched his hand towards him and stepped back a little.

"I think there is some misunderstanding. I'm supposed to meet someone else here..." Jun was barely able to hide his annoyance but it wasn't completely because of the man in front of him this time. If this person wasn't the man he was supposed to meet it would mean he would have to wait even longer.

"I see, I'm sorry." Jun turned around, not feeling like talking to this man who still nervously lingered around him. When he looked at his watch again he saw almost forty minutes had passed since he had got there. He was just about to give up and go back home when the man from earlier softly muttered something that somehow got his attention.

"I must be crazy for doing this. Of course I would get stood up..." Jun laughed softly.

"Well that makes the two of us then." He muttered, not necessarily towards the other man but it was interpreted that way.

"You got stood up as well?" Jun sighed and looked at his watch.

"Looks that way yes. Total waste of time and this heat is killing me." He turned around again, looking around the park for one last time before he softly mumbled: "Might as well go home and get over it."

"Wait. Since we are both here now and probably have nothing to do since the plans are ruined now anyway, want to go for a drink? This heat is killing me too and I could use something cold." Jun thought about it for a moment. He preferred going home and try to get some work done but on the other hand, his day wasn't going like he wanted anyway so he could just as well go with this man. Besides, he could use a cold drink as well, preferable with at least some alcohol in it. After he agreed the other man looked less tense and smiled kindly.

"I know a great place close by, great beer and not too pricy." Jun smiled and agreed going there since the way the other man described it sounded perfect. Just before the slightly shorter man wanted to turn around he seemed to change his mind and stuck his hand out.

"I'm sorry, how rude of me. My name is Sakurai Sho. Nice to meet you Matsumoto-san." Jun smiled and shook his hand.

"Nice to meet you too." They walked in silence to the small cafe the other man had mentioned. Jun didn't mind this silence at all, he didn't really feel like talking yet and most definitely not to this stranger. But after they had ordered their drinks, beer for both of them, the silence started to feel a bit awkward. Jun though he might as well break it now to make their time at least a bit enjoyable instead of staying in this awkward silence for the rest of the evening, or for how long he would be sitting there. He didn't think he might be there for long though, but a little chat couldn't hurt him.

"So who stood you up? Girlfriend?" Jun asked, crooking his eyebrow when the other man shook his head.

"God this is embarrassing to admit but I got stood up by an internet date. I knew I shouldn't have done it." The embarrassment was evident on the other man's face as he refused to meet Jun's eyes.

"But why did you do it then?" Jun asked curiously even though he couldn't be bothered by it at the same time. But his gut told him that the outcome of it might be interesting so he decided to follow it.

"I work for the newspaper. New news and new articles that need to be written every day which takes a lot of time. I don't have time to go out much so I thought I might try one of those websites. Just my luck that it turned out I got stood up, I knew I shouldn't have done it." Jun smiled, finding the similarity of the situation they were in really funny.

"I suppose you can't force some things after all." Sakurai nodded slowly and for a few seconds their eyes met, making Jun feel strangely warm.

"I suppose not..." Sakurai said slowly, his gaze still lingering on Jun who felt his cheeks heating up. It felt like some spell fell down over them but neither of them seemed to know what was going on. It was a weird coincidence that they’d met and even more since they seemed to be so alike. Suddenly the spell was broken by the waitress bringing their drinks, smiling kindly and asking if they needed anything else. They both shook their heads and Sho smiled a bit confused at Jun who grabbed his beer and took a big gulp.

"So how about you?" Sho asked.

"I work for a small fashion magazine where I write articles about the latest fashionable gadgets. It's not a dream job but it pays well and I get to try most of them myself, what is sometimes fun. But it takes a lot of time and doesn't leave much time for other things. A friend recommended going out on a blind date since that’s how he met his girlfriend, and in a weak moment I decided to give it a try." Sakurai laughed and Jun couldn't help to think his laugh was kind of cute. Not only the sound of it but also the way it made his eyes twinkle.

"Just our luck then. For once doing something we wouldn't usually do and end up wasting our time in the end." Jun smiled and raised his glass.

"Well that depends on how you look at it. Let’s make a toast to two total strangers with the same fate meeting by coincidence." Sakurai smiled and raised his glass as well.

"I don't mind toasting to that. You are right; looking at it that way makes it a lot better." As they toasted their eyes met for a short moment again and somehow Jun felt like staying even longer than the one beer he told himself he would only have. He felt like he could be friends with this man, maybe even more but that might be impossible. What were the chances this man would like guys as well? Of course he could ask and find out but that would be a bit too bold and he didn't want to scare him away so soon. Suddenly something hit him. The other man came to him before, asking if he could be the one he was supposed to meet, which would mean he had a date with a man.

"Is there something on my face?" Sho suddenly asked a bit nervous, making Jun realize he was staring a bit too much at the man in front of him.

"No it's perfectly fine, I just thought of something interesting." The other man relaxed again and smiled. Jun started to really like that smile.

"So you are a journalist, right? Is that something you’ve always wanted to be?" Jun asked, hoping to be able to get a nice conversation with this man going and it seemed to work. A long time and around three beers later Jun had learned Sakurai was around two years older than him and apparently they had a lot of things in common. They both liked to read books about different subjects, mostly suspense and mystery detectives, in their free time while listening to music. It appeared that they both had attended the same university to study journalism, only Jun was two years behind him, probably the reason why they’d never met in the big building. And the coincidences kept piling up. They had both applied, at some point, to Johnny’s Entertainment and were turned down – to be honest, Jun couldn’t believe someone as handsome as the man in front of him would ever be turned down. As the sun went down, and it slowly started to cool down outside, Jun somehow started to believe someone above was playing with them. It was almost too much how they seemed to be so alike; the two of them meeting was a bit too surreal.

"It's getting late, I think I should leave..." Sakurai said, looking at his watch and outside. Matsumoto nodded and waved at the waitress for the check. As they both put some money on the table to pay for their drinks Jun made up his mind. It was now or never at this moment, even though the coincidence of this situation was rare and in a way exiting, it was almost nearly impossible for the two of them to meet like this again in such a big city.

"I had fun today talking to you, Sakurai-san. How about exchanging phone numbers and do this again one day?" His heart started to beat a bit faster as he waited for the answer and he let out the breath he had been holding when the other man pulled out his phone.

"Sure. It was nice talking to you, I don't mind at all doing it again." While they exchanged numbers Jun couldn't help the smile that spread across his face. Sure, he still wasn't sure if Sakurai liked him as well in the way Jun started to like him but just being friends would be just as great.

"That's a date then." Matsumoto blurted out when they stepped outside, not sure why. But, to his surprise, he saw the most beautiful smile on Sakurai's face that day.

"A date indeed. Talk to you soon then, Matsumoto-san." Sho turned around to go the other way as Jun but the younger man's voice stopped him in his tracks.

"Jun is fine." The older man turned around and smiled widely while waving his hand. He didn't say anything anymore, just turned around again and disappeared behind a corner.

Two days later, during lunch, Jun almost jumped up in surprise when his phone gave a small buzz, indicating he had received a new message. When he saw the ID of the sender, a smile appeared on his face.

From: Sakurai Sho
Subject: Drink?

I really had fun the other day; want to go for a drink again? Are you free this Sunday? No strings attached, just a drink with a new friend. Unless you want to see it as more...

Sho

Jun smiled and quickly typed a message back, the smile lingering on his face the rest of the day.

To: Sakurai Sho
